HOW IT WORKS

Everything You Wanted to Know About Custom Dress Shirt Fabrics

Thread Count

A measure of courness or fineness of a fabric, with all else being equal, the higher the thread count, the smoother and silkier the fabric. If you've looked at our fabric selection, you'll also notice generally the higher the thread count, the more expensive the fabric. Thread count is denominated in numbers like 60s, 80s, 100s, etc. Although it is important to remember that thread count is not everything. The construction of the cotton needs to be done by a good mill, and if the cotton is treated it should be done in a way that's not harmful to to the skin or the environment. You should also consider what the purpose of the dress shirt is, e.g. if you are needing a more rugged shirt that is mostly worn casually, a 70s thread count will do the trick.

Ply

Two ply is not twice as thick as one ply! Ply simply refers to the number of yarns that are twisted together to make a thread. Two ply threads are considered higher quality both for their durability and adding a fineness to the feel of the fabric.

GSM

The grams per meter is a denomination of the weight of a fabric. An average cotton is around 97-103 GSM, if it's under 90 GSM, you've got quite a light fabric which is better for warmer climates. If it's over 110, concurrently it's a heavier fabric, anything over 120 GSM should be avoided in hot summer climates.

Broadcloth

A tightly woven fabric, Broadcloth is lightweight, smooth and very flat-looking. What that means is there is no pattern in the weaves of the threads. Broadcloth dress shirts are highly versatile. You'll always be able to find a broadcloth in our Classics collection.

Oxford

For sports shirts or guys who like to be a slightly more active in their dress shirts. It has a slightly rougher texture than other weaves making one of the most durable fabrics. It's not very dressy, although perfect for as a more casual button down that can be worn slightly wrinkled out of the dryer.

Twill

As broadcloth is known for its flatness and oxford for its ruggedness, twill is discernable by the diagonal lines or texture. It is generally a very tight weave which makes for a smooth finish, even mistakable for silk. It will take slightly more care than an broadcloth or oxford, but those wanting to make the right impression, it's more than worth it.
